Liffeybank women traveled to Meath on Sunday afternoon to take on Rossin Rovers in the Leinster Junior Shield. The clubs had never met and after 8 minutes it looked like the visitors would run away with the game, 2 early goals by Sarah Scully (2 min) and Ali Lowry (8 min) put us well on the road to victory but the home side were only warming up and scored 2 wonderful goals themselves to leave it level at the break. The second half was much the same as the first with both teams going for it and creating chances but on 90 minutes the sides hadn't added to their scores and into extra time we went.
Liffeybank struck early when Lilli Mathias raced onto a trough ball and fired across the keeper to put the visitors back in front. Liffeybank were comfortable enough all through extra time despite been down to 10 players after Fainche Grimes picked up an injury and all the subs had been used. Then, with 30 seconds remaining Rovers got a free kick just outside the box, Grace Thompson made a great save but Rossin pounced on the rebound and fired home from close range.
Penalties ensued and after the first 10 penalties were scored Lilli Mathias stepped up to score the first sudden death strike, Rossin then crashed their 6th penalty off the crossbar to give Liffeybank a very hard earned victory. Both sides retired to the club house were Rossin showed great hospitality with food and drinks before the St.Catherine's based side traveled home.
